Biography

Ladislas Count Batthyány (since 1915 Prince Batthyány-Strattmann) was born as a descendant of one of the most noble families of Hungary in the year 1870. After studies of agriculture, astronomy, chemistry, philosophy and medicine (MD. 1900) at the Viennese University he founded a hospital in Kittsee, where he worked himself as a medical practitioner. After the treaty of Trianon he donated this hospital to the Land Burgenland and moved 1920 to Körmend in Hungary.  Here he established another clinic, which was especially renowned for its treatment of eye diseases. Dr. Batthyány-Strattmann, who died in Vienna in 1931, was not only one of the leading ophthalmologists of his days, he was also father of 13 children and a generous benefactor, whose charitable foundations  are visible even today. The process of the beatification of the Servant of God Ladislas Batthyány-Strattmann was started in 1944 and was accomplished by the late Holy Father John Paul II on March 23, 2003.
